Sophon has announced a November 25 deadline for users to withdraw their assets before its mainnet shutdown. The Ethereum layer-2 blockchain, which launched with a focus on consumer applications like gaming, entertainment, and AI, will begin shutting down key infrastructure and related websites on that date. Any remaining assets on the Sophon Chain after November 25 risk becoming permanently inaccessible.
The decision follows a June announcement that Sophon would abandon its blockchain and shift operations to Base. The team cited the high costs of maintaining a standalone blockchain as the reason for the move. Users are urged to withdraw assets such as Sophon (SOPH), Ether (ETH), and USDC (USDC), as well as claim any outstanding staking or Guardian rewards.
The shutdown mirrors a recent announcement from Abstract, another consumer-focused Ethereum layer-2 network. Abstract, developed by Igloo, the parent company of Pudgy Penguins, will close on December 15 after losing tens of millions of dollars supporting the network. Sophon previously raised $60 million through a node sale in 2024, following a $10 million funding round.
