South Africa Mandates Authorized Intermediaries for Cross-Border Crypto Transactions
South Africa has introduced a new regulatory framework for cross-border cryptocurrency transactions. The framework requires that all international digital asset transfers pass through authorized service providers, who must report these transactions to the country's central banking authority.
The National Treasury and South African Reserve Bank released the draft Crypto Asset Manual on Monday, outlining specific circumstances under which digital currency transactions become subject to cross-border regulatory requirements. Transactions involving purchases or sales denominated in rand through locally authorized providers are exempt from these requirements.
Users seeking to transfer cryptocurrency assets internationally must utilize either their single discretionary allowance or foreign capital allowance provisions, and complete all international transfers exclusively through authorized crypto asset service providers.
