South Africa's Absa Pioneers Crypto Custody on the Continent
African banking giant Absa has become the first bank on the continent to offer bitcoin custody services. The Johannesburg-based lender will serve institutional clients, primarily by holding their Bitcoin assets.
While Bitcoin is the primary asset that Absa will custody, the bank's head of digital assets, Rob Downes, stated that other digital assets will follow.
Absa's move into crypto custody underscores growing institutional adoption in South Africa. The country ranked 30th globally for crypto adoption and had $36 billion in on-chain value last year, according to a Chainalysis report. South Africa has received regulatory clarity, which has led to hundreds of licenses being issued to Virtual Asset Service Providers (VASPs).
This development mirrors similar moves by major banks such as BNY Mellon and Deutsche Bank, who have also entered the crypto custody space.
