South Korea to Auction Seized Crypto as State Assets

South Korea is poised to take a more structured approach to managing digital assets it acquires through donations or criminal forfeitures, according to a report from Chosun Biz. The government will classify these assets as state property and auction them off immediately after acquisition.

This move comes amid the country's efforts to regulate the cryptocurrency industry, which has seen significant growth and occasional scandals. As of April, the central government held approximately 78 billion won ($56.3 million) in virtual assets.

The proposed changes will provide clear legal grounds for the state to manage and dispose of these assets, which have previously fallen into a regulatory gray area. Authorities are reviewing the legal basis for entrusting these assets to private cryptocurrency exchanges and recovering funds held on overseas exchanges and in electronic wallets.
