South Korea's Exchanges Rush to List More Stablecoins Amid Market Downturn
The South Korean cryptocurrency market has seen a significant surge in stablecoin listings on major exchanges. According to recent data, the number of listed stablecoins has doubled from just three a year ago, with these assets serving as a reliable safe haven for investors navigating the downturn.
Upbit, South Korea's largest exchange, recently announced it would begin supporting trading of Ripple's stablecoin, RLUSD. This addition brings the total number of dollar-pegged stablecoins available on Upbit's won market to six: RLUSD, Tether (USDT), USD Coin (USDC), USDS, USDE, and World Liberty Financial USD (USD1).
Rival exchanges are also actively expanding their stablecoin lineups. Coinone preemptively listed RLUSD in March and now supports six dollar-pegged stablecoins. Bithumb offers trading in five stablecoins, excluding RLUSD.
The reason exchanges are rushing to expand their stablecoin offerings is clear: these assets generate consistent trading demand regardless of market conditions. Even as the prolonged bear market dampens appetite for Bitcoin and altcoins, demand for stablecoins, used for trading, remittances, and storing funds, never disappears.
