South Korea's Reverse Kimchi Premium Nears Zero on Bitcoin and Altcoins
The price gap between Bitcoin on South Korean exchanges and global platforms has nearly vanished. As of July 28, the 'reverse kimchi premium' - a phenomenon where cryptocurrencies trade at a discount domestically due to bearish local sentiment or capital outflows - contracted to just -0.06%. This is a significant re-alignment in local market dynamics after a period of steeper discounts.
According to data from Upbit and Binance, the price gap between Bitcoin on these exchanges has narrowed dramatically. On July 27, the discount was -0.27%, but by July 28 it had shrunk to just -0.06%. This rapid tightening of the spread suggests a cooling of the specific selling pressure or a shift in local sentiment that had previously driven Korean prices below the global benchmark.
The trend extended across the broader altcoin market, where discounts also contracted significantly. Ethereum (ETH) recorded a reverse kimchi premium of -0.12% on July 28, a sharp improvement from the -0.23% observed the day before. Dogecoin and XRP also saw their gaps virtually close.
