A recent police raid in Malaysia has shed light on the growing issue of electricity theft linked to cryptocurrency mining across Southeast Asia.

The operation, which took place on July 22 and 23, resulted in the arrest of three suspects and the seizure of 71 cryptocurrency mining machines, along with computers, routers, and vehicles.

According to authorities, the group had been mining Bitcoin continuously for about a month using stolen electricity, bypassing electricity meters to avoid paying for power. The estimated losses during this period were around USD$16,600.

The Johor case is just one example of the broader problem in Malaysia, where nearly 14,000 properties have been linked to electricity theft involving cryptocurrency mining between 2020 and 2025. The national utility estimated cumulative losses at roughly EUR€1.1 billion during that period.
