SpaceXAI Unveils Massive Compute Expansion Plans, Touts $84.5 Billion Leasing Deal
SpaceXAI is planning to switch on approximately 420,000 Nvidia GPUs in November as part of its efforts to meet new compute commitments. This move is a key component of the company's broader push at Colossus, a supercomputer cluster located in Memphis, Tennessee, which powers Elon Musk's AI ambitions.
The Colossus site currently houses around 780,000 Nvidia GPUs, with the newer Colossus 2 facility alone boasting approximately 550,000 units. To put this into perspective, Musk has announced plans to bring an additional 660,000 GPUs online by year-end, which would nearly double the cluster in a few months.
The hardware is intended to support training and inference for Grok, SpaceXAI's family of AI models, including Grok 4.7. The company is also building a 1.2-gigawatt power plant to support the expanded cluster. Notably, SpaceXAI has leased over 220,000 GPUs from Colossus 1 to Anthropic, a direct rival in the model race, which could be worth up to $84.5 billion by 2029.
