Spain Develops Registry to Track Crypto Assets
Spain is introducing a new cryptocurrency registry that will allow authorities to quickly identify who is behind a crypto account, as part of the country's efforts to combat money laundering.
The registry, which is being developed in response to European regulations, will collect identifying data on accounts, including the holder's information and opening and closing dates. However, it will not store balances or transaction details.
The main purpose of this measure is to facilitate access for authorities, such as the Treasury and Police, to the necessary financial information for investigations into money laundering and terrorist financing crimes.
Crypto asset service providers in Spain will also be subject to new obligations, including providing declarations about balances in crypto assets and information from service providers. The full implementation of these regulations is expected by July 1, 2026.
