Sparkasse's Crypto Custody Service: What You Need to Know
Sparkasse's Krypto powered by Deka service allows customers to buy and hold cryptocurrencies within their bank account. However, this model differs from traditional cryptocurrency exchanges in that the cryptographic keys remain with the bank, rather than being held by the customer.
This custody model raises questions about ownership and control. While the customer has economic ownership of the cryptocurrency, the custodian (in this case, DekaBank) holds actual control over the assets. This is a crucial distinction to understand when considering the Sparkasse's offering.
The difference between custody models and traditional self-custody is highlighted by the example of private keys, wallets, and custody positions. A private key is a secret sequence of numbers used for transactions on a blockchain, while a wallet is simply the management of those keys. A custody position, on the other hand, is an entry in the bank's books stating that a holding is due to the customer.
The Sparkasse model does not provide for the transfer of coins to an external wallet, which can be seen as both convenient (no need for seed phrases or risk of loss) and inconvenient (customers are tied to the institution).
