Spotify's Crypto Arm Clears Regulatory Hurdle with Bank Charter Approval
Spotify, the music streaming service, has obtained a controversial approval to run a bank in the US. The company's crypto business, which is reportedly worth billions of dollars, will be allowed to operate as a Special Purpose National Bank Charter (SPNHC).
The approval was granted by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC), an agency within the US Department of the Treasury.
While some see this move as a step forward for fintech innovation, others have raised concerns about potential risks and regulatory challenges. A former OCC official expressed skepticism, saying 'this is not what we need'.
