Stablecoin Market Plummets to Near-Record Low Amid Orderly Asset Shift
The stablecoin market has plummeted to nearly $300 billion in value, marking its third-largest drawdown on record. According to Cumberland, a crypto trading firm, this decline represents a drop of around 5% from May 20's peak of $321 billion. Notably, despite the significant decrease in value, Tether's USDT and Circle's USDC have maintained their pegs to the US dollar.
This drawdown is unusual as it lacks the severe price instability seen during previous stablecoin contractions. In contrast to 2022's TerraUSD collapse and the U.S. banking crisis that disrupted USDC, this decline seems more orderly. Cumberland attributes this to investors shifting assets rather than a loss of confidence in USDT or USDC.
Another trend contributing to the market shift is the growth of yield-bearing on-chain cash equivalents, which have expanded 101% since 2026's start. These products allow users to earn returns while keeping their assets on blockchain networks. Additionally, non-dollar stablecoins are increasing in value, with a combined market worth above $1.5 billion.
This suggests that the latest stablecoin drawdown is not solely due to investors losing faith in these tokens but rather capital moving between different forms of digital money as demand for traditional crypto trading weakens.
