Stablecoin Surge Dominates Argentine Crypto Market
The crypto market in Argentina has become increasingly dollar-focused, with stablecoins capturing 94% of peso-denominated trading volume. According to data from Artemis and cited by a16z crypto, this trend highlights how crypto is being used less for speculation and more as a tool for accessing US dollars.
After Argentina reintroduced currency controls in 2019, individuals were restricted to purchasing $200 through the official market each month. Crypto exchanges and peer-to-peer markets provided an alternative route, allowing users to purchase stablecoins with pesos and transfer them around the clock.
The continued demand for stablecoins persists even as inflation has fallen from 25.5% to 2.1%. Downloads of top crypto apps in Argentina increased by 93% year over year in 2024, with one in five Argentinians now using crypto. Stablecoin usage is also becoming part of everyday income flows, with USDC payments continuing for contractors.
Deel data shows that as of July 2026, the share of contractors paid in USDC has dropped to about 20% of its peak level but remains meaningful. This suggests stablecoin usage is no longer tied only to periods of extreme inflation.
