Stablecoin Transaction Volume Surges to $33 Trillion, Driving Merchant Interest in Crypto Payments
The global stablecoin transaction volume reached $33 trillion in 2025, representing a 72% year-over-year growth. This surge has driven merchant interest in digital currency payment acceptance, with over 316 million stablecoin holders worldwide.
Major e-commerce platforms like Shopify and PrestaShop are now supporting crypto payments through various gateways. On Shopify, merchants can integrate BitPay, Coinbase Commerce, NOWPayments, and CoinPayments, with fees ranging from 0.5% to 2%, depending on the provider and merchant volume.
PrestaShop supports crypto payments via modules from Aurpay, Plisio, NOWPayments, CoinGate, and BTCPay Server, with fees starting at 0%. Stablecoins account for 40% of BitPay's merchant transaction volume in 2025, up from 30% the previous year.
Most crypto payment gateways convert received cryptocurrency to fiat currency automatically, allowing merchants to avoid price volatility exposure on incoming customer payments. However, network fees are typically passed to the customer at checkout or bundled into the flat transaction fee structure by some gateways.
