Stablecoins Become Essential for AI Agents, Says Coinbase CEO

Share

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has identified a surprising new demand for stablecoins: artificial intelligence agents. In a recent post on X, Armstrong stated that while stablecoin payments are useful for humans, they're becoming an essential requirement for AI agents operating in the digital economy.

According to Armstrong, AI agents require a programmable and instant medium of exchange, which stablecoins provide. Unlike traditional payment systems, stablecoins can be integrated directly into AI workflows, enabling seamless machine-to-machine transactions.

The growth of the stablecoin market is notable, with total supply exceeding $150 billion as of early 2025. While human-driven use cases have dominated demand, Armstrong's remarks suggest that the next wave of adoption may not be driven by humans at all, but by automated systems.
