Stablecoin issuers are playing an increasingly vital role in supporting the U.S. Treasury market, as traditional buyers like Japan, China, and France reduce their holdings. Data from the Federal Reserve shows that stablecoin issuers now hold roughly $200 billion in U.S. Treasuries, with Tether (USDT) alone accounting for $141 billion. This demand is helping to offset the declining global appetite for U.S. government debt, which has been driven by inflation concerns, Trump tariffs, and a broader global bond sell-off.
The Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco notes that the rising demand from stablecoin issuers for short-dated Treasuries is mitigating the impact of foreign governments selling U.S. debt. If current trends continue, stablecoin issuers' ownership of short-duration U.S. Treasuries could reach $400 billion by 2030. Standard Chartered projects the stablecoin market capitalization to surpass $2 trillion by 2028, which could lead to $1 trillion in demand for short-dated Treasury bills. This consistent demand helps stabilize the U.S. dollar's status as the world's reserve currency.
The growth in stablecoin adoption is being driven by financial institutions and fintech companies pushing to tokenize assets. Visa reported a 200% year-over-year increase in stablecoin card program payment volume, with over 160 active programs worldwide. Circle's Payments Network includes 175 financial institutions, and the recently launched Arc Level 1 live blockchain network features validators like Intercontinental Exchange, Mastercard, Visa, Standard Chartered, and BlackRock.
Stablecoins are essential for on-chain settlement, requiring a dollar that effectively 'lives' online and is backed by short-dated Treasuries or repo positions. The recently passed GENIUS Act mandates that issuers back every token 1:1 with cash, deposits, or Treasuries dated less than 93 days. With the total stablecoin market cap at $305 billion and the two largest issuers holding approximately $220 billion in Treasury-linked reserves, their impact on U.S. Treasury markets is expected to grow as stablecoin volumes expand with institutional finance initiatives.
