Stablecoins Gain Traction in Business Payments
Visa has released data showing that 17% of its stablecoin-linked card volume in the fiscal 2026 year-to-date period came from business and commercial card programs. This is significant because companies use cards differently from retail users. Business volume is a key indicator of the broader use case of stablecoins.
Stablecoins are spreading beyond crypto spending cards into treasury, settlement, and cross-border business payments. The data suggests that stablecoins are becoming an important infrastructure for businesses. Financial institutions and payment providers are exploring stablecoins as a way to settle transactions, manage treasuries, and make supplier payments.
Visa supports over 160 stablecoin-linked card programs across consumer and business use cases. Cards remain a useful bridge between old and new payment rails. Stablecoins can settle on-chain, but most businesses still operate in a world of bank accounts, invoices, and conventional accounting systems.
The hybrid model of holding or receiving digital dollars while still spending through existing merchant infrastructure is likely to be important during the transition period. Regulation will still shape how quickly this model spreads. In Europe, issuers are working inside MiCA, and exchanges have already adjusted which stablecoins they support.
