Stablecoins Revolutionize Cross-Border Payments as Africa Leads Adoption
Stablecoins are evolving rapidly from cryptocurrency applications into critical financial infrastructure for global payments and treasury management, according to Norman Wooding, CEO of SCRYPT. In an interview with Korea IT Times, he explained how stablecoins are becoming the backbone of cross-border payments, reducing costs, accelerating transactions, and connecting markets across borders.
The use of stablecoins is no longer limited to cryptocurrency markets but is now being integrated into mainstream financial systems, including payment infrastructure, treasury management, and foreign exchange. Wooding noted that settlement, which was previously a chain of correspondent banks, is becoming an always-on digital network.
Africa has emerged as one of the world's most compelling real-world laboratories for stablecoin adoption, with many structural challenges driving this transformation. The region faces dollar shortages, currency volatility, and inefficient cross-border payment rails, making stablecoins a welcome relief. Wooding emphasized that commercial demand is driving the growth of stablecoin adoption in Africa, rather than speculation.
Wooding also discussed the convergence of artificial intelligence (AI) and programmable money, stating that trust, accountability, and regulatory certainty will determine how quickly intelligent financial networks develop. He noted that AI can reason but cannot hold or move money on its own, making stablecoins a crucial component in enabling autonomous payments.
