Stablecoins Rise as Efficient Cross-Border Payment Solution
Stablecoins have emerged as an increasingly popular method for cross-border payments due to their efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Unlike traditional bank remittances, which are slow and expensive, stablecoin transfers can occur in seconds to minutes via the blockchain network.
The process involves three legs: on-ramp conversion, where the sender converts local currency into a stablecoin; on-chain transfer, where the stablecoin is sent to the recipient's wallet; and off-ramp conversion, where the recipient exchanges the stablecoins for their local currency. However, this final step often incurs high fees due to low liquidity in emerging markets.
The largest example of successful cross-border use cases is business-to-business (B2B) payments, with treasury management being a close second. Consumer remittances are also notable, but account for the least volume. Remittance companies like Western Union and Bitso have already integrated stablecoins into their payment processes.
However, there are risks and limitations associated with cross-border stablecoin payments. The primary concerns include off-ramp liquidity and local FX spreads, reserve and redemption risk, accounting and tax treatment differences across jurisdictions, and issuer concentration in the market.
