Stablecoins to Hit Multi-Trillion-Dollar Milestone within Five Years, Ethena CEO Predicts
The growth of stablecoins has been one of the most significant developments in the crypto market, and few companies have played a bigger role in that shift than Ethena Labs. Founded by Guy Young, Ethena's yield-bearing digital dollar, USDe, exploded from zero to nearly $15 billion in assets within 18 months, settling at around $5.5-6 billion since then.
USDe works like a different kind of bank deposit, where users hand over collateral and earn a return generated by the underlying assets. Ethena keeps a smaller cut than rivals like Tether, which captures nearly all the yield on its own reserves. Instead, USDe holders receive 'a majority' of that yield, with the remainder going to the protocol and ENA, Ethena's separate token.
Young has pushed back against the idea of early buybacks for ENA tokens, calling it a 'counter signal' about growth prospects. He prefers to reinvest in the company. Young expects stablecoins to become a multi-trillion-dollar sector within five years and reward-bearing products like USDe to reach $100 billion-$200 billion in supply within three to five years.
Ethena has also focused on expanding its institutional offerings, rolling out iUSDe for institutional investors and partnering with stock market investors through StablecoinX (USDE), a publicly traded company built around a treasury of ENA tokens. Ethena has diversified USDe's reserves by cutting its reliance on perpetual futures and adding institutional lending and real-world assets.
