Starknet BTC Bridging Goes Dark After Sophisticated Security Attack
Starknet's Bitcoin bridging capabilities have been temporarily suspended due to a security incident involving Atomiq, the infrastructure provider powering BTC-to-Starknet swaps. On August 20, Atomiq yanked all of its swap routes offline after discovering sophisticated AI-assisted security attacks targeting its operations.
No user funds were lost in the incident, as the swaps relied on a trustless escrow model secured by Bitcoin's proof-of-work consensus. This means that the security of user funds didn't depend on Atomiq staying online, but rather on the cryptographic guarantees baked into the protocol layer.
Starknet has confirmed that it is actively preparing a new integration to restore Bitcoin bridging capabilities, with an aggressive timeline of days, not weeks or months. The new integration will include enhancements over the previous Atomiq-powered system, including existing swap services such as zero-slippage Bitcoin transactions and support for the strkBTC token.
