Starknet Mines Quantum-Safe Bitcoin Transaction on Mainnet
Starknet, an Ethereum Layer-2 network, has achieved a significant milestone in its efforts to make quantum-safe Bitcoin transactions more practical. The project successfully mined a quantum-safe Bitcoin transaction on its mainnet, demonstrating that the technology can be implemented in a live blockchain environment.
The transaction was generated using a computational process that required approximately 3,100 GPU-hours and $320 in computing costs. This development highlights ongoing efforts by researchers to prepare cryptocurrency networks for potential threats posed by advances in quantum computing.
Bitcoin relies on cryptographic mechanisms to protect transactions and establish ownership of funds, making the potential development of large-scale quantum computers a long-term security concern. Starknet's demonstration aims to address this risk before quantum computing reaches a level capable of threatening widely used blockchain cryptography.
The collaboration among StarkWare, Yukon Research, and Eigan Labs is focused on reducing the processing requirements and associated costs of generating quantum-resistant transactions. The team has established a prize pool exceeding $20,000 to encourage further development in the field.
