StarkWare Completes First Quantum-Resistant Bitcoin Transaction on Main Network
StarkWare has achieved a significant milestone in Bitcoin's quantum resistance by completing the first quantum-resistant transaction on the main network. The transaction, which was processed in block 964,199 on August 26, used StarkWare's Quantum Safe Bitcoin (QSB) method to move a 10,000-satoshi output without exposing the sender's public key data.
The QSB method relies on signature grinding and RIPEMD-160 hashing to minimize public key exposure, providing roughly 118-bit resistance against Shor's algorithm. This approach is computationally expensive and can take hours to produce a single transaction, but it demonstrates that Bitcoin's existing rules can accommodate quantum defense without protocol changes.
While the QSB method offers a temporary solution, StarkWare emphasizes that it only protects one transaction at a time and has limitations for users today. It works with pre-SegWit addresses and is not supported by Taproot or the Lightning Network, making it inaccessible to mainstream wallets and exchanges.
