StarkWare Cuts Quantum-Safe Bitcoin Transaction Costs by Nearly 80%
StarkWare has made significant progress in reducing the cost of creating quantum-resistant Bitcoin transactions. According to an update on September 23, the estimated computational cost of constructing a quantum-safe transaction has fallen by approximately 79%, from around $320 to under $67. This improvement is attributed to optimizations made during the Quantum-Safe Bitcoin Optimization Challenge, which involved developers and researchers working together to refine the software needed for generating QSB transactions.
The challenge achieved a significant reduction in GPU computation hours required for preparing a QSB transaction, from approximately 3,100 GPU-hours to under $67. This represents a substantial decrease in cost, making it more feasible for large holders who may prioritize the ability to execute a protective transaction when conditions warrant it. However, StarkWare emphasizes that QSB is still considered an emergency measure and that broader, long-term protection likely requires a consensus-layer soft fork.
The Quantum-Safe Bitcoin approach aims to add hash-based protection against quantum attacks without changing Bitcoin's consensus rules. While it has the potential to improve resilience against future quantum threats, its cost and complexity limit its applicability as a routine mechanism for all holders. StarkWare continues to favor a soft fork as a better long-term solution for widespread quantum protection.
