StarkWare Secures First Quantum-Resistant Bitcoin Transaction
StarkWare has achieved a major milestone in securing Bitcoin against quantum computing risks. The company announced that it has successfully executed the first quantum-resistant Bitcoin transaction.
The breakthrough comes from Avihu Levy, StarkWare's head of applications division, who devised a method called 'signature grinding' to protect holdings. This method adds an extra lock to prevent public key data exposure while transactions sit in the Bitcoin mempool.
Signature grinding works by refusing to accept the first valid signature and instead brute-forcing millions of candidates until one has a shape that doesn't expose the public key material to quantum computers. However, this method is deliberately expensive and can take hours of computing to produce a single transaction.
StarkWare notes that this method requires the cooperation of miners, as ordinary nodes would ignore such transactions due to their unusual format. The company used MARA's Slipstream service to mine its transaction.
