Stellar Boosts Privacy and Security with New Upgrades
The Stellar Development Foundation (SDF) has been busy this quarter, releasing two major protocol upgrades and making significant progress on institutional-grade privacy. In May, Protocol 26 'Yardstick' went live on mainnet, introducing a quorum freeze mechanism that allows validators to freeze compromised ledger keys within minutes rather than hours. This was a direct response to a DeFi protocol exploit in February 2026.
Protocol 27 'Zipper', which entered testnet in June, adds authentication delegation for smart contract accounts and address-bound Soroban credentials to prevent replay attacks. The foundation has also published a comprehensive Quantum Preparedness Plan, outlining a three-stage roadmap to defend against quantum computing threats. The plan begins with post-quantum verification capabilities in Soroban contracts by 2026.
The launch of Circle's Cross-Chain Transfer Protocol (CCTP) on Stellar represents a major infrastructure milestone, connecting Stellar's USDC liquidity to 24 other blockchains through a burn-and-mint mechanism that settles in seconds. The foundation has also released a developer preview of Confidential Tokens, enabling any SEP-41 token to gain private balances and transfer amounts through zero-knowledge proofs.
