Stellar Expands Financial Access for the Unbanked with Stablecoins and Mobile Wallets
Stellar, a blockchain-based payments network, is making strides in helping unbanked individuals access financial services. According to the World Bank's Global Findex 2025 report, 1.3 billion adults lack a financial account, but about 900 million of them own a mobile phone. Stellar's tools, which require only a smartphone and not a bank branch, aim to bridge this gap.
The Stellar network supports stablecoins like USDC and MGUSD, the latter launched by MoneyGram on June 2, 2026. Users can hold digital dollars in wallets like Vesseo or Decaf and cash out at partner locations such as MoneyGram, which operates in over 170 countries. The Stellar Disbursement Platform (SDP) allows organizations to send bulk payments to recipients, trackable on-chain.
Real-world examples include the UNHCR's pilot program in Ukraine, where refugees receive USDC via the Vesseo wallet, and workers like Luis in Mexico, who get paid in USDC and cash out at MoneyGram. However, Stellar's reach is limited. It does not serve those without a smartphone, a valid ID, or access to a cash agent. Additionally, MGUSD is currently only available in the United States, with a global rollout planned.
Recent developments include the launch of Protocol 28 on September 16, 2026, which eases smart contract migration, and Stellar's partnership with Chainlink for data streams and feeds. Despite these advancements, Stellar does not address the primary barrier for many unbanked individuals: lack of money.
