The Strait of Hormuz, a critical oil chokepoint, is back in focus as Iran and Oman hold talks to restore normal commercial shipping. The negotiations aim to ease tensions that began in February 2026 after US and Israeli military strikes against Iran.

Roughly one-fifth of the world's oil supply passes through this narrow waterway connecting the Persian Gulf to the wider world. Iranian officials have been holding constructive talks with their Omani counterparts, who occupy a unique diplomatic position as a mediator between Iran and the West.

The joint working group established in June is making progress, but neither side has announced specific benchmarks or a target date for restoring full commercial shipping. The London conference organized by the US and UK adds an external dimension to the talks, with Iran historically being sensitive to what it perceives as external pressure on sovereign maritime matters.

The Strait of Hormuz crisis carries significant stakes for oil markets and crypto. A sustained restriction on commercial passage would force tankers onto longer routes around the Cape of Good Hope, adding weeks to transit times and significant fuel costs. These costs get passed along eventually, showing up in energy prices and then in consumer prices more broadly.
