BitMart Shuts Down Trading Platform Amid Industry Consolidation

BitMart, a cryptocurrency exchange that has been in operation for nine years, is shutting down its trading platform. The company announced on July 26, 2026, that it would begin an orderly wind-down of its operations, citing 'operating conditions, market environment, and future strategic direction' as the reasons.

The shutdown will take place over several stages. New registrations were suspended at 01:30 UTC on July 26, deposits and new trading orders were blocked, and futures accounts were switched to reduce-only mode. On August 26, all spot and futures trading will cease at 01:00 UTC, giving users a month to close their positions.

The exchange has warned that withdrawals may be subject to manual review, including KYC verification, login and IP checks, withdrawal-address screening, source-of-funds review, Travel Rule compliance, and sanctions checks. Users are advised to complete identity verification and close all positions before August 26, then submit withdrawal requests by 05:00 UTC the same day.

The market has reacted negatively to the news, with BitMart's BMX token falling by over 58% in a single day, dropping to around 8 cents. The token's market value is now around $27 million, down from its peak of roughly $80 million. This is not the first time BitMart has faced challenges - it was hacked in December 2021, with hackers draining around $196 million from its hot wallets.

BitMart isn't alone in shutting down operations - fellow exchange BitMEX announced its closure just three days earlier, after 11 years of operation. The two mid-tier exchanges point to a broader trend of consolidation in the industry, as larger players dominate and smaller ones struggle to survive.
