Strategy Faces Earnings Test Amid Bitcoin Treasury Uncertainty
Strategy, the world's largest corporate Bitcoin holder, is facing a crucial test as it prepares to report its second-quarter earnings on Thursday. Investors are focused on whether the company's pivot toward selling Bitcoins and capital structure reforms can stabilize its business model, which has been under intense pressure.
The company holds 843,775 Bitcoins as of late July, but faces mounting questions about its ability to fund operations and preferred stock dividends as Bitcoin trades below its average acquisition cost. Analysts expect earnings of $0.79 per share on revenue of $122.9 million, a dramatic sequential improvement from the prior quarter's loss of $38.25 per share.
Strategy's preferred securities have traded below their $100 par value, and the company faces a preferred-dividend bill exceeding $1.5 billion annually. Management has responded by increasing the STRC dividend to 12% and establishing a $2.55 billion USD reserve, but investors will scrutinize whether these moves are sufficient to restore the security to par.
The company's Bitcoin treasury management remains a central debate, with investors parsing any updates on Bitcoin sales, cash reserves, and management's forward guidance on accumulation plans. Strategy has also authorized separate $1 billion buyback programs for both common stock and Digital Credit securities.
