Cryptocurrencies Labelled 'Currency of Choice for Crooks' in Senate Hearing
Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal has labeled cryptocurrencies as the preferred financial tool of crooks. He made this statement during a Senate forum that analyzed the impact of financial fraud using digital assets.
The senator's criticism was backed by testimony from Lori Flowers, a pharmaceutical executive who lost most of her personal savings in 2022 due to a romance scam scheme. According to her testimony, the fraud perpetrators used blockchain infrastructure to transfer stolen funds quickly and irreversibly.
Blumenthal argued that the operational characteristics of decentralized networks facilitate money laundering maneuvers and act as a catalyst for the expansion of fraudulent schemes across U.S. territory. He also expressed concerns about the current draft of the CLARITY Act, which he believes could strip investigative authority from state attorneys general.
