Strategy Inc. Shares Plummet as Clarity Act Stalls in Senate
Strategy Inc., formerly known as MicroStrategy, saw its shares (MSTR) drop by 5% on Tuesday following the US Senate's failure to advance the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act. The bill, which aimed to establish a regulatory framework for digital assets, was championed by Republicans and supported by major players in the crypto industry.
The legislation's failure weighed heavily on other crypto-related stocks, with Coinbase shares falling 10%. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that the legislation would give his department additional tools to address evasion, while Coinbase and the Blockchain Association warned that failure to pass the bill could encourage crypto-related activity to move overseas.
Strategy's stock is closely tied to Bitcoin due to the company holding a substantial amount of the cryptocurrency on its balance sheet. As a result, changes in Bitcoin's price can significantly impact the company's shares. The stalled legislation could have longer-term implications for Strategy and other digital asset companies, as clearer market-structure rules are widely viewed as an important step towards greater institutional adoption of Bitcoin.
Despite the setback, Barclays has reaffirmed its Buy rating on Strategy and raised its price target to $160. This move comes despite renewed volatility in Bitcoin.
