Strategy Sells Up to $5 Billion in Bitcoin Amid Weaker Earnings
Bitcoin's price plummeted to a three-week low on Friday after Strategy, the largest institutional holder of Bitcoin, announced plans to sell up to $5 billion of its Bitcoin holdings. The company's quarterly revenue fell short of analyst estimates, leading CEO Phong Le to explain that selling Bitcoin is 'appropriate for the company' as it allows them to build up their cash reserves and potentially fund stock repurchases.
Strategy's total Bitcoin holdings amount to 843,775 tokens, valued at around $63.8 billion or approximately $75,476 per token. The company's decision to sell its Bitcoin comes after it announced its first sale in years in June, which sparked a sell-off in the leading cryptocurrency to below $60,000.
JPMorgan analysts caution that Strategy should add to its cash reserves, arguing this move would 'restore confidence and reduce investor concerns'. However, Saylor defended Strategy's approach to Bitcoin, claiming 'volatility tests capital structure' and reaffirmed that Strategy 'remains focused on Bitcoin, disciplined capital allocation, credit quality and long-term value creation.'
