Strategy Soars 53%: A Levered Play on Bitcoin with Uncertain Future
Strategy's stock price has surged by 53% in the past month, largely driven by the 25% rise in Bitcoin's value. This cryptocurrency-focused company is now one of Wall Street's most polarizing stocks. Its main business involves buying and holding Bitcoin, with its current holdings valued at $64.5 billion, accounting for 92% of its total enterprise value.
The bull case for Strategy emphasizes that the company's share price will likely grow faster than Bitcoin over the long term, making it a levered play on the digital asset. The business has issued debt in the past and continues to raise capital by selling common equity and preferred shares. This allows it to engage in various capital-markets activities, taking advantage of fiat currency's constant debasement.
However, this strategy can run into trouble if capital markets dry up or if the cryptocurrency is in a down cycle. Strategy has maintained its dividend obligations despite Bitcoin being 36% off its peak from last October. The company has even sold some Bitcoin to ensure it can meet its payment obligations without defaulting.
The bear case focuses on the complexity of Strategy's financial engineering, which involves constant shareholder dilution as the company goes all in on a novel digital asset that is less than two decades old. If Bitcoin's price falls dramatically and stays down for an extended period, Strategy shares will likely come under immense pressure, making it difficult to raise equity capital at reasonable terms.
