Strategy Takes $8.2B Hit as Crypto Market Volatility Bites
Strategy, the largest corporate Bitcoin holder, reported an $8.2 billion net loss in Q2 due to a significant decline in Bitcoin prices. The company's crypto holdings saw an $8.32 billion unrealized markdown as a result of the price drop.
The loss is largely attributed to Strategy's significant investment in Bitcoin, with the company increasing its holdings by 25% this year to 843,775 BTC, valued at about $54.8 billion. This represents a decline from the $63.7 billion acquisition cost, underscoring the volatility of the cryptocurrency market.
Despite the loss, Strategy has strengthened its finances through equity offerings, raising $17 billion and maintaining a $3.75 billion cash reserve to cover dividends and interest for over two years. The company also plans to sell some Bitcoin under a new monetization program to boost liquidity and will initiate a $1 billion share buyback.
