Strategy's $64 Billion Bitcoin Bet Sits on $10 Billion Paper Loss
Michael Saylor's Strategy has accumulated an impressive 840,447 Bitcoin at an average price of $75,482 each. This represents a significant portion of the total Bitcoin in circulation, approximately 4%. However, with the current price of Bitcoin sitting at $65,000, Strategy's massive position is now underwater.
The company's average purchase price exceeds the current market value by nearly $10 billion, resulting in a substantial paper loss. This has real-world consequences for investors in Strategy stock, which has declined 35% year to date, outperforming Bitcoin's 25% decline during the same period.
Strategy has suspended its Bitcoin purchasing operations and introduced a new capital management plan aimed at boosting the value of its stock offerings. Unfortunately, this plan involves selling some of the company's Bitcoin holdings to raise cash for ongoing operations, something Strategy had previously promised not to do.
