Strategy's Bitcoin Bet Squeezes Shorts Out of $7 Billion
Strategy Inc., formerly known as MicroStrategy, experienced a significant surge in its market capitalization over two days, adding $7 billion to its value. This sudden increase was triggered by Michael Saylor's public statement that the company has no intention of selling its massive Bitcoin stash.
The catalyst for this short squeeze was the fact that Strategy had become the most shorted large-cap stock on the planet, with around 9% of its total market cap in short interest as of late July. This represented approximately $3 billion worth of bets against the stock.
Analyst Tom Lee had earlier noted that bearish investors appeared to have overleveraged their positions against MSTR, making it ripe for a violent upward move. Saylor's consistency in messaging, emphasizing his company's commitment to buying Bitcoin on a quarterly basis and 'not selling holdings', reinforced the narrative that MSTR is effectively a leveraged long bet on Bitcoin.
The correlation between MSTR's stock price and Bitcoin's spot price remains tight, meaning any sustained rally in Bitcoin can rapidly transform Strategy's balance sheet from a liability story into an asset story. With approximately $3 billion still outstanding in notional short interest, this squeeze may not be finished if Bitcoin prices continue to hold or push higher.
