Strategy's Bitcoin Buy May Signal Further Downside Ahead of Potential Bottom
The Bitcoin market remains uncertain as investors debate whether it has reached its bottom. Sentiment-wise, BTC still hasn't shown signs of a definitive low. Analysts point out that positioning is more net negative than at any stage of previous bear markets.
Exchange volumes have plummeted, and sentiment remains extreme fear. Investors continue to capitulate, signaling weak conviction. This weakness is now visible on-chain, with short-term holders (STHs) aggressively selling their losses in early August.
A notable example was the 1st of August, when STHs sent over 32,000 BTC to exchanges at a loss, one of the largest realized loss-selling events of the past 30 days. This signals that capitulation is still ongoing.
Against this backdrop, any break below key support could quickly turn into an exit-liquidity event. The picture looks even weaker when we look at U.S. investor positioning. Despite the U.S.-Iran peace talks and oil prices crashing more than 10%, Bitcoin's Coinbase Premium Index has dropped nearly 25% so far in August.
This points to fading U.S. Spot demand, with investors showing little appetite to buy the 'dip' even as macro headwinds begin to ease. With that backdrop, some analysts believe Bitcoin could still trade below its $52k realized price before putting in a final bottom.
