Strategy's Bitcoin Buying Spree Ends as It Focuses on Balance Sheet
Strategy has been on a Bitcoin buying spree for years, but it's gone four weeks without purchasing any more of the cryptocurrency. This decision has raised concerns among investors about the company's business model and whether it's still a good bet to buy its stock.
Strategy's strategy was to issue stocks and debt to fund its massive Bitcoin purchases. As the price of Bitcoin rose, Strategy's investment grew in value, allowing the company to raise more capital and continue buying more BTC. However, with Bitcoin's price having fallen nearly halfway from its peak last year, Strategy has shifted its focus to fortifying its balance sheet.
Instead of buying more Bitcoin, Strategy is selling stocks to raise cash reserves, which have now reached $3.2 billion. This decision makes sense given the volatile nature of Bitcoin's price, but it also raises questions about the company's ability to generate value for shareholders beyond simply being a leveraged bet on rising Bitcoin prices.
Strategy currently holds 843,775 BTC at an average cost of $75,476 per token, which means it's sitting on paper losses. The company has cash obligations in the form of interest payments on its debt and dividends paid out to preferred shares. Holding more cash provides a safety buffer from potential nightmare situations.
