Strategy's Bitcoin Plan Hinges on Access to Capital Markets, Not Price Volatility

Strategy's $66 billion Bitcoin plan is not as dependent on price volatility as previously thought. According to a new report by Regime Intelligence, the company's real vulnerability lies in its ability to access capital markets and fund its obligations.

The report highlights that Strategy's large Bitcoin holdings may provide a cushion against sharp price drops, but its balance-sheet structure makes it susceptible to a mismatch between its funding capacity and debt obligations. With approximately $22 billion in debt and preferred claims backed by an 840,447 BTC treasury, Strategy must continue to refinance or raise funds to cover annual charges estimated at about $1.76 billion.

Regime Intelligence's stress test suggests that Bitcoin would need to fall by around 96% before the value of holdings no longer covers its convertible notes, shifting the danger from forced liquidation to cash-flow obligations. The analysis warns that if financing conditions worsen during a prolonged decline, raising new capital could become progressively more difficult or expensive.

The report's author emphasizes that investors should monitor Strategy's preferred share price and cash reserves, which currently cover about 2.6 times the annualized charges. However, if multiple risks stack at the same time, including a BTC price drop and deteriorating equity and preferred pricing measures, capital raising could become more challenging.
