Strategy's Bitcoin Treasury Hinges on Capital Markets, Not Price
Strategy's massive Bitcoin treasury is often seen as a buffer against market downturns. However, a recent analysis from Regime Intelligence suggests that its biggest vulnerability lies in its access to capital markets, not the price of Bitcoin.
The report notes that Strategy's 840,447 BTC stash sits behind roughly $22 billion in debt and preferred claims, making it dependent on continually raising fresh capital to meet obligations. This means that even if Bitcoin prices plummet, Strategy would still be able to cover its annual charges.
A stress test by Regime Intelligence found that Bitcoin would need to fall around 96% before Strategy's Bitcoin holdings and reserves would no longer cover its convertible notes. However, this shifts the risk to the other side of the balance sheet, where Strategy must continue servicing $1.76 billion in annual preferred dividends and interest regardless of Bitcoin's price.
Strategy CEO Phong Le has emphasized that despite selling some BTC this year to meet obligations, the company still holds 'about 25 times more' than it has sold. He also stated that Strategy plans to resume Bitcoin purchases later this year.
