Strategy's Debt Framework Withstands Bitcoin Price Drop to $21K
Strategy Inc., a company that specializes in Bitcoin treasuries, has conducted an internal stress test to gauge its financial resilience. The analysis reveals that even if Bitcoin's price plummets to $21,000, roughly 80% below current levels, Strategy's debt and preferred stock instruments would still maintain a coverage rating above 1.0x.
The company uses the BTC Floor metric to measure the minimum performance its Bitcoin reserves need to deliver annually. Currently, this figure sits at -11.34%, indicating that Bitcoin would need to decline by about 11% per year over a weighted credit duration of around 5.79 years for Strategy's coverage ratios to dip below the critical threshold.
The company's internal modeling goes further than the $21K scenario, suggesting that its framework could withstand Bitcoin prices as low as $7,000 to $8,000 before the math truly breaks. This is due in part to the company's use of convertible notes and preferred stock, which provides a temporal buffer against volatility.
Strategy carries approximately $6.7 billion in outstanding convertible notes and $15.5 billion in notional preferred stock, which are secured by nearly 844,000 Bitcoin. This substantial cushion means that creditors would remain whole even in a scenario where Bitcoin loses the vast majority of its value from current levels.
