Strategy's Indirect Bitcoin Exposure at Risk Amid MSCI Index Review
MSCI, a leading global index provider, has opened a consultation on August 14, 2026, to strip companies without a meaningful operating business from its global equity indexes. In its simulation, this would affect Strategy and Metaplanet, the two largest listed bitcoin holders.
The decision will be published by October 16, 2026, and will take effect on December 1, 2026. This means that there is a window of opportunity for market participants to respond to the proposal until September 30, 2026.
The proposed screen works in two stages: first, it checks if operating assets make up more than 50 percent of total assets. If not, the company moves on to stage two, where it is evaluated based on five metrics, including operating asset intensity, expense intensity, operating cash flow, fair value intensity, and capital dependence.
Strategy, which holds its balance sheet almost entirely in bitcoin, is particularly affected by this proposal. As of June 30, 2026, digital assets stood at $49.67 billion against total assets of $52.56 billion, or roughly 94.5 percent. If Strategy leaves the index, millions of savings plans on broad world indexes would lose an indirect bitcoin exposure without it ever appearing in the fund's name.
