Stripe to Expand Stablecoin Card Services Globally by Year-End
Stripe is set to significantly expand its stablecoin-backed card offerings, aiming to cover more than 100 countries by the end of 2026. The company's head of stablecoins and crypto, Henri Stern, shared this plan with CoinDesk, highlighting the potential for fintechs, marketplaces, and payment platforms to offer cards funded by stablecoin balances to their users.
The service allows platforms to provide users with a stablecoin balance that can be linked to a card program through Stripe. Customers can then use these cards for everyday transactions, while Stripe and Bridge manage the infrastructure supporting the balance, card issuing, and payment processing.
This expansion is particularly beneficial for platforms that pay freelancers, sellers, or contractors across borders, where traditional dollar payments can incur conversion costs, delays, or limited access to dollar accounts. Stripe's role involves packaging the issuing, compliance, and payment operations, simplifying the process for platforms operating in multiple markets.
Stripe has already launched stablecoin-backed card issuing in dozens of countries as a public-preview product. The company's broader roadmap includes future support for spending stablecoin balances held in DeFi lending protocols, though the immediate focus remains on the card rollout. The success of this initiative will depend on platform adoption and user engagement, demonstrating whether stablecoins can reduce the friction of cross-border payments.
