Sweden Cracks Down on Crypto Miners with $56M Tax Bill in Boden

Sweden's tax authority has launched a crackdown on cryptocurrency mining operations in the northern town of Boden, issuing massive additional tax assessments against six companies totaling nearly $56 million. The Skatteverket agency determined that these firms structured their activities to obtain tax reliefs reserved for ordinary data-processing facilities.

The officials argue that the operators employed complex corporate arrangements intended to conceal the fact that their facilities were primarily dedicated to mining, a process of generating new units of digital currency.

Patrik Lillqvist, head of intelligence at Skatteverket, described the pattern in blunt terms: 'You come to a society and steal from it.'

The action follows an earlier investigation by public broadcaster SVT Norrbotten, which estimated that crypto operations had deprived the Swedish state of approximately $1 billion.
