Switzerland Slams Brakes on Crypto-Friendly Belarus

Share

The Swiss Confederation has intensified sanctions pressure on Belarus by joining the European Union's comprehensive package of restrictive measures against Minsk. This decision aims to synchronize and align international sanctions with those applied against Russia, starting September 19.

Key restrictions include a ban on exporting products enhancing military, technological, and industrial potential; closing transit corridors; blocking imports generating substantial revenue for Belarus; and restricting financial operations involving decentralized platforms, crypto services, and the 'digital Belarusian ruble' registered in Belarus within Swiss territory.

The measures are expected to severely impact Minsk's economy by reducing foreign currency inflows and increasing its dependence on Russian and Chinese markets. Experts warn that this move may push Belarus further towards the margins, but could also prompt a change in policy.
