Switzerland Surges Ahead of Germany in Cryptocurrency Adoption
Switzerland's years-long efforts to foster cryptocurrency adoption have paid off, according to a recent study. The survey found that 23% of Swiss adults use cryptocurrency at least occasionally, more than double Germany's 11% rate.
The study, conducted by Bearingpoint and released on July 30, polled over 4,000 adults across Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. It revealed that while Austria had a moderate adoption rate of 18%, Switzerland led the way in terms of openness to cryptocurrency and willingness to use digital assets as international trade or reserve currencies.
Switzerland's Distributed Ledger Technology Act, which became effective on August 1, 2021, provided clarity on how tokenized assets fit into existing legal structures. This regulatory certainty helped attract companies and investors, fueling the growth of Crypto Valley, a blockchain ecosystem spanning Switzerland and Liechtenstein.
The survey also found that cryptocurrency adoption remains strongest among younger adults and varies by gender, education, and income. In Switzerland, 36% of respondents between 18 and 24 reported using cryptocurrency, while Austria and Germany showed lower participation levels.
