Taiwan Blocks Coinbase and Kalshi Over Election Betting Concerns

Share

Taiwan has taken action to block the websites of Coinbase Global Inc. and Kalshi Inc., citing concerns over suspected election betting. The move comes just weeks before local polls that will gauge public support for President Lai Ching-te’s government.

A New Taipei court authorized the Taiwanese communications regulator and internet registry to restrict domestic access to these platforms, according to a ruling reviewed by Bloomberg News. Some Coinbase users in Taiwan reported difficulties accessing the site starting Wednesday.

The decision reflects growing regulatory scrutiny over platforms that might facilitate betting on political outcomes, particularly in the lead-up to elections. The exact nature of the suspected activities or the evidence prompting the blockade remains unclear.
