James Talarico made history on Tuesday night, becoming the first Democrat in over three decades to win a statewide race in Texas. The victory over Ken Paxton, the state's scandal-plagued Attorney General, ended one of the longest winning streaks for any party in U.S. politics. Talarico, a state legislator and seminarian, capitalized on Paxton's legal troubles and a wave of early voting that surpassed even the 2024 presidential election numbers.

The race drew intense national attention, with over 7.7 million Texans casting early ballots. Talarico's campaign blended progressive optimism with faith-based messaging, appealing to both traditional Democrats and some former Republican voters. His viral speeches and strong fundraising, bolstered by outside spending, helped him overcome Paxton's backing from Elon Musk, who poured $224 million into ads supporting the Republican.

Paxton's campaign struggled from the start, with Trump's inconsistent support and the candidate's refusal to debate Talarico. The Republican's tenure as Attorney General, once seen as a strength, became a liability amid allegations of cronyism. Meanwhile, Talarico's coalition-building and relentless campaigning turned him into a political star, proving that Texas' shifting demographics could favor Democrats with the right candidate.

Republican strategists had warned that holding the Texas seat would drain resources needed elsewhere, with estimates suggesting a rescue mission could cost $250 million. Trump's endorsement of Paxton in the primary effectively ended Sen. John Cornyn's political career, highlighting the GOP's desperation to retain the seat. Despite the massive spending, Talarico's victory marked a seismic shift in Texas politics.
