Tandem Trajectory: Top Cryptocurrencies Move in Step
The four largest cryptocurrencies - Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, and XRP - have been moving in tandem over the past year, with correlation coefficients ranging from 0.82 to 0.90.
This means that when one of these assets experiences a significant price drop, the others are likely to follow suit. Over the same period, all four cryptocurrencies experienced drawdowns, with Bitcoin dropping by around 27%, Ethereum by 38%, Solana by 48%, and XRP by 50%.
When it comes to weighting a portfolio of these assets, market capitalization is often used as a yardstick. However, this approach leads to an unbalanced split, with over three-quarters of the portfolio consisting of Bitcoin alone.
To mitigate risk, investors may consider equal weighting or core-satellite allocation. In this scenario, the core asset would be the one that carries the most weight and stays put for the longest period, while the satellite assets are smaller and more volatile.
